Diagnose common Magic Link problems including missing emails, expired links, account-matching issues, blocked registration, redirects, and supported integration behaviour.
Most Magic Link problems fall into one of a few areas: the email was not delivered, the link is no longer valid, the user account cannot be matched, account creation is being blocked intentionally, or the redirect/integration flow is not behaving as expected.
This guide covers:
- Magic Link emails not arriving
- Expired or already-used links
- Resend throttling and max attempts
- Same-IP enforcement failures
- Existing users not being matched
- New users being blocked by Guardrails
- Unexpected account creation
- Redirect issues
- WooCommerce, membership, and LMS troubleshooting
Start by Identifying the Type of Failure
The Magic Link Email Does Not Arrive
First separate Magic Link generation from email delivery.
VentraConnect is not a hosted email-delivery service. Magic Link emails rely on the WordPress site's mail configuration and sending provider.
Check:
- Your WordPress site can send normal test emails
- Your SMTP plugin or mail provider is connected correctly
- The sender address/domain is valid
- SPF/DKIM are configured correctly where applicable
- The message is not in spam or junk
- You are not being blocked by the Magic Link resend throttle
The Link Has Expired
Magic Links are time-limited. Once the configured expiry period has passed, the link is no longer valid.
Ask the user to request a new Magic Link instead of trying to reuse an older email.
If links expire too quickly:
- Review the configured Link expiry value
- Allow enough time for normal email delivery
- Consider whether users commonly switch devices before opening email
- Check for delayed mail delivery before increasing the expiry window unnecessarily
The Link Was Already Used
Magic Links are single-use. After a link is successfully consumed, the same link cannot be used again.
Expected behaviour
- The first successful use signs the user in
- A second attempt with the same link should fail
- The user must request a new Magic Link for another login
If the user has several Magic Link emails in their inbox, make sure they are testing the most recent request rather than repeatedly opening an older message.
Resend Throttle Is Blocking Another Request
The resend throttle controls how quickly another Magic Link can be requested for the same email address.
Repeated clicking can make troubleshooting more confusing. If the user keeps requesting another link immediately, the resend throttle may prevent the next request.
Wait for the configured throttle period before requesting another link, then test again.
Maximum Attempts Have Been Reached
The Max attempts setting limits how many times the same issued Magic Link can be attempted.
If the allowed attempts have been exhausted, request a new Magic Link instead of continuing to retry the same one.
Same-IP Enforcement Is Blocking the Link
If Same-IP enforcement is enabled, the Magic Link must be used from the same IP address that requested it.
Same-IP enforcement is intentionally strict. If your users frequently switch networks between requesting and opening email, consider whether this option fits your audience.
An Existing User Cannot Log In
Magic Link authenticates a user by the email address they submit.
Check:
- The submitted email exactly matches the email on the existing WordPress user account
- The user is testing the correct site/environment
- The account still exists and has not been removed
- The Magic Link has not expired or already been used
- The resend throttle or max-attempt rules are not affecting the current request
If the person already has a WordPress account, do not create a second account as a workaround. Fix the email/account match instead.
A New User Cannot Create an Account
This is not automatically a problem. VentraConnect may be intentionally blocking account creation from that login surface.
Expected Guardrail behaviour: a login form can remain available to existing users without becoming an automatic signup form for every new email address.
A Login Form Is Creating Users Unexpectedly
If Magic Link is creating users from a surface that should be existing-user-only, check the controls in priority order.
Check:
- The master Allow new accounts from default login forms setting on standard login surfaces
- Whether Magic Link is set to Login Only or Login & Register
- The Guardrail/account-creation rule for the supported integration login form
- The underlying plugin's own registration settings
- Whether you are testing a login form or an intentional registration/checkout flow
Placement does not decide registration. Showing Magic Link on a form and allowing that form to create users are separate concerns.
Magic Link Logs In but Redirects to the Wrong Page
Magic Link can use a method-specific redirect override or fall back to the applicable global/integration-aware redirect behaviour.
Check:
- Whether a Magic Link-specific Redirect override is configured
- Your global VentraConnect redirect settings
- The expected return-to-previous-page behaviour
- The integration-specific redirect behaviour for WooCommerce or another supported Pro integration
- Whether a custom URL is valid and points to the intended page
Magic Link Works in WordPress but Not in WooCommerce / Membership / LMS
Core WordPress Magic Link support is available in Free, while third-party integration placements require VentraConnect Pro.
Check:
- VentraConnect Pro is active
- The integration is one VentraConnect currently supports
- The relevant Magic Link placement is enabled
- The exact integration surface is supported
- Account creation is allowed or blocked as intended for that flow
- You are testing the real login/registration/checkout/enrollment journey rather than assuming all forms behave the same
Use the individual integration guide as the source of truth for exact placement and account-creation behaviour.
